Imagination Before Resolution

Imagination Before Resolution

It's resolution time of year, artist friends. I'm fascinated by resolutions. Have you noticed, they are so often framed as a willpower phenomena?Welp. I guess I did/didn't have the willpower.(Can you relate?) I suppose when I look at my life, that feels like the truth. However, in this framework even if I succeed, I'm set up to have less power in the long run.  I think achieving resolutions is not about the presence of will. I think it's about the presence of imagination. This isn't an idea commonly thought about, but bear with me. People don't realize it, but they mention this phenomena casually all the time. Perhaps you've heard someone say: "I just can't imagine {insert...

Winter Solstice and Art

Winter Solstice and Art

\ I'm thinking of birth a lot this year. There was of course, the coming of Braeden this past August. There was also the birth of myself as a mother. There are many births one can experience. As I think of birth I think of its predecessor: CONTRACTION. This isn't just a post about labor contractions. There are also many contractions one can experience.Winter is contraction.  It could be argued that Winter Solstice is the biggest contraction of them all. Everything sucks inward for the big push in the Spring. It is cold. It is dark. Life goes dormant. Before modern amenities, it was a harsh time. Winter was something to be...

10 Artists for Your Holiday Shopping

10 Artists for Your Holiday Shopping

I love to think of Christmas as election season. In a market economy, how you spend money is as powerful (or more so... yeah bummer) than how you vote. Each year I reflect on the kind of world I want, and which places are most in aligment for me to spend money. If an Art World is part of your vision, these ten artists are a great place to start. I own a piece by each of them, I love their work, and know you will too. 1. Paula Nelson/ Whoa Nelson! Number one on this list is the oldest friend on this...

Peace is Now-here

Peace is Now-here

Years ago, I ran across the phrase sprayed on the side of a cement pillar:  "Peace is Nowhere." As I glanced it over, my brain auto-corrected it to: "Peace is Now Here."It stopped me in my tracks. How fascinating it was, that baked into a word that literally means "In or at no place" was the phrase that means "In or at this place." Peace is Nowhere sounds like a dramatic thing to spray on a parking garage, but it's not off-base. We've built a world that profits off people existing in a low-grade state of stress. Agitated people spend more money. Agitated...

The Story of Energy Over Image

This is my first post in three months. What a ride it's been! Braeden Anthony was born August 1st. I was blessed to spend every moment since with him. We are beginning to resume art over here, and will be back in full swing in 2022. This morning I was walking with B around Town Lake, here in Austin. Locals know it's a jewel of this city: A beautiful 12 mile stretch of sun-dappled trails around the Colorado River. As I pushed the stroller with Braeden in tow, I was struck by the smiles he was getting from perfect strangers. It...
